Spellbinder Die Cuts

The Spellbinder die cuts are easy to use and the cutting and embossing techniques are done in two simple steps. One of the best things about the Spellbinder die cuts is that they can easily be used in cutting and embossing machines such as the Sizzix Big Shot.

Spellbinder is the brand name of a unique die cut tool that is used in paper crafts. This die cut is a metal piece that comes to you carved and cut into unique shapes.  The die cut actually has a few elements to it, there is a raised cutting edge that cuts out the die image or shape very similar to a paper punch.  There is also a thin layer of metal that is on the inner side of the cut edge, this is used to emboss the shape that you just cut. Now with one tool you can cut the image, emboss the image making is more detailed and attractive or realistic.  The third element of this die cut is that if you simply turn the die over it has become a stencil for you to artfully color the inner embossed area of your shape.  All this in one tool.

The Spellbinder die cuts are easy to use and the cutting and embossing techniques are done in two simple steps. One of the best things about the Spellbinder die cuts is that they can easily be used in cutting and embossing machines such as the Sizzix Big Shot.

You will need to have the two brown Spellbinder embossing pads to do the actual embossing step with the Sizzix Big Shot.  Since that is the machine I have I am afraid I can't share with you how these die cuts work with other machines.  When using the Spellbinder die cuts you will want to think of them as a Wafer die, that means that they are very thin like the wafer dies that come from Sizzix.  These dies are placed on a clear cutting plate on top of the sandwich board that is used in nearly all cutting processes with the Sizzix Big Shot.  You will then place the second clear cutting plate on top of the stack and roll this through your Big Shot.  When the sandwich stack comes out on the other side you will have paper to remove and the cutting shape will be laid inside the die, making it ready to emboss.

When embossing you will open the sandwich stack, opening only the top tab.  Again using the first clear pad and placing the pieces you are ready to emboss on top, covering the embossing shapes with the two brown embossing mats from Spellbinder and again placing the second clear cutting plate on top.  Rolling this through you Big Shot one more time and you will have a neatly embossed shape at the finish.

The only minor down side that I have come across with the Spellbinder die cuts is that they are neatly cut into beautiful shapes of thin metal upon arrival, the packaging they arrive in is really not one designed for storing as the package tears away instead of opening up.  This leaves me worried that if I am not very careful I will bend the die cut.  I am on a mission to find a proper storage situation for this lovely product, until then I am very careful with the original packaging so that it can be used as a temporary storage.
